Located on the border between Styria and Lower Austria, Lake Erlaufsee is considered one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Austria. It lies about 3 km northwest of Mariazell, at an altitude of 827–835 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Gemeindealpe massif, surrounded by forests, alpine meadows and mountain peaks. The turquoise surface of the lake, the fresh mountain air and the peaceful atmosphere make this place impressive from the very first moment. Thanks to its crystal-clear drinking water quality, Erlaufsee is regarded as one of the greatest natural treasures of the Mariazeller Land region.
In summer, the lake attracts visitors looking for relaxation and refreshment during hot days. The water temperature usually ranges from 19 to 22°C and can reach up to 24°C after several particularly warm days. The bathing area is free and open to everyone. Visitors can enjoy a pebble beach, spacious sunbathing lawns, jetties, water slides, a diving trampoline and a playground for children. Due to the exceptional clarity of the water, Erlaufsee is also a popular destination for diving — underwater visibility reaches up to 20 metres, while the lake’s maximum depth is around 38 metres.
Erlaufsee offers much more than just swimming. Visitors can rent boats, pedal boats or SUP boards and admire the lake from a completely different perspective. One of the highlights is a cruise on the historic boat “Christina”, offering peaceful views of the alpine scenery and the surrounding nature.
The area around the lake is also ideal for walks and hiking. A popular trail circles the entire lake in about an hour, leading through quiet forest paths and scenic viewpoints. Erlaufsee is also a great starting point for hiking trails leading to Gemeindealpe, Ötscher and the Grünautal valley.
The unique character of this place is also connected to nature protection. The northern shore of the lake lies within the Natura 2000 protected area Ötscher–Dürrenstein. Thanks to limited development and regular water quality controls, the lake has preserved its natural landscape and exceptional purity.
Erlaufsee is equally beautiful in winter. During frosty days, the surface of the lake often freezes, creating a natural ice rink. The surroundings then turn into a peaceful winter landscape, perfect for walking, ice skating and cross-country skiing.
While staying in Mariazell, it is worth combining a visit to the famous shrine with some time to relax at Erlaufsee. It is a place where nature, mountains and silence create a truly unique atmosphere throughout the year.
