Shrines of Europe on the path to certification of the Cultural Routes

Shrines of Europe is taking part in the certification process of the Council of Europe Cultural Routes for 2026–2027. This is an important step in the further development of our initiative and in building a stronger presence on the European map of cultural cooperation.

The Council of Europe Cultural Routes are international networks that connect places, institutions, and communities around themes significant to European history and culture. Their aim is not only to protect and promote heritage, but also to foster intercultural dialogue and deepen understanding of the continent’s shared roots. They are based on values such as human rights, cultural diversity, and cross-border cooperation, while also supporting education, scientific research, and sustainable tourism. Each route is transnational and creates a coherent narrative of Europe, linking the past with the present.

This approach naturally aligns with the idea of Shrines of Europe, which brings together cities of major pilgrimage and spiritual importance across different parts of the continent. The shared heritage of shrines, centuries-old pilgrimage traditions, and long-standing international cooperation fit well within the framework of the programme—both thematically and in terms of values. As a result, the initiative has the potential to become a recognized European route showcasing the spiritual dimension of Europe’s history and its relevance today.

As part of the preparations for certification, our representative took part in a specialised seminar dedicated to the “Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” programme. The meeting provided valuable insights into how the programme works and the requirements that must be met to apply for certification.

The training covered both the general principles of Cultural Routes and the specific evaluation criteria—ranging from transnational relevance, through educational and promotional activities, to the development of cultural tourism. Particular attention was also given to partnership cooperation and the creation of a sustainable and well-managed network.

Participants also had the opportunity to consult their projects with experts and exchange experiences, which proved to be a valuable part of the seminar. The second day focused on communication, brand building, and the practical aspects of preparing the application.

Participation in the seminar is an important support in our certification process. The knowledge gained allows us to further strengthen Shrines of Europe as a project with a truly European dimension. We look ahead with optimism to the next stages and believe that our experience and international cooperation will lead to a positive outcome.
