Visitors to Mariazell are increasingly taking advantage of attractions that go beyond the traditional model of pilgrimage. This year, the town’s offer has been expanded to include a new event – Lichterzauber on the Mariazeller Bürgeralpe, featuring light installations arranged on the mountain located directly above the town.
Lichterzauber takes place at an altitude of 1,267 metres above sea level and can be reached via the Bürgeralpe Express cable car, whose lower station is located next to the centre of Mariazell and the Christmas market. The ride to the summit takes only a few minutes and is also accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. At the top, a walking route has been laid out through the Holzknechtland area, previously known as a family theme park presenting the history of forestry in the region.
During the winter season, this area has been specially arranged with light installations. Illuminated paths, trees and the surroundings of a small lake create a fairytale-like route designed for relaxed exploration, especially after dark. The most distinctive element of the installation is the synchronised light and sound show at the observation tower, which takes place regularly in the evening hours. It leaves a strong impression and appeals to visitors of all ages. Walking the entire route takes about one hour and does not require any special preparation or equipment. A mountain inn is also open at the summit, offering refreshments before returning to the town.
An important detail for those planning a visit is that Lichterzauber will only be available until 6 January. This means that if you have not yet visited Mariazell during this winter season, there is still a chance to see this attraction, but time is limited. After this date, the installations will be dismantled and, according to the organisers, the event will return only in the next winter season.
It is also worth noting that a visit to Lichterzauber can easily be combined with other elements of a stay in Mariazell. An evening ascent to the Bürgeralpe complements a visit to the basilica, a walk through the market square or participation in seasonal events organised as part of the Mariazeller Advent.
Mariazell remains above all an important pilgrimage destination; however, the example of Lichterzauber shows how contemporary tourism initiatives can function alongside tradition, not competing with it but complementing it. If a winter trip to Austria is still among your plans, now is the best time to go. The next opportunity to see the Bürgeralpe in its illuminated form will not come until next year.
