The Krampuses Are Coming! Have You Been Good?

Picturesquely located in Styria, Mariazell is Austria’s most important pilgrimage site and one of the most atmospheric Alpine towns. Surrounded by mountains, it attracts not only pilgrims but also tourists eager to discover local traditions, soak up the festive atmosphere, and experience regional customs.

During Advent, Mariazell turns into a real land of magic and fairy tales. Christmas carols fill the market square, the air smells of gingerbread and mulled wine, and after dusk begins the moment everyone waits for—the parade of traditional Krampuses, shaggy horned creatures that have been part of Alpine folklore for centuries. Every year on December 6th, all children impatiently await the arrival of Saint Nicholas, who brings gifts and sweets—of course, only if they behaved well all year long. In Alpine regions, however, Nicholas never arrives alone. He is accompanied by his dark helpers—the Krampuses. And although their frightening appearance inspires fear, today they are as popular as Saint Nicholas himself—beloved by children and adults who eagerly await their spectacular parade each year.

On the evening of November 22nd, they arrive in Mariazell. On this day, regional Krampus groups present hand-carved horned masks and impressive furry costumes, creating an unforgettable show. They march with loud cowbells, clanking chains, fire, lights, and music, turning the town into a scene straight from Alpine legends.

The figure of the Krampus has a long history dating back to pre-Christian times, when people believed in demonic beings responsible for fertility and protecting households. The name “Krampus” comes from the Bavarian word Krampen, meaning “claw,” and these figures represent the dark counterpart to the kind Saint Nicholas. While the old man with the long grey beard rewards well-behaved children, his devilish companions remind everyone that bad behaviour may be punished.

Today, the Krampus is a symbol of festive humour, yet its presence still gives Advent celebrations a unique character.

The traditional Krampus Run—the Krampuslauf—in Mariazell, the highlight of the parade, is one of the most famous in Austria. Every year, groups from all over Styria, Lower Austria, and Salzburg come to take part in this devilish procession. Each group has its own distinctive masks, costumes, and customs. Some Krampuses even chase chosen spectators—of course, all in good fun.

The event attracts large crowds who watch this slightly frightening but highly energetic spectacle with fascination. The characteristic sounds, terrifying faces, and glow of bonfires create an atmosphere unlike anything else.

The Krampus tradition doesn’t end in Mariazell. Similar parades can be seen throughout the Alpine region, including Altotting in Bavaria and Einsiedeln in Switzerland. Everywhere, the Krampus is a symbol of winter folklore that, despite its dark nature, brings joy and excitement.

If you want to feel the atmosphere of an authentic Alpine Advent, see a living tradition, and experience emotions you won’t find anywhere else—Mariazell in November and December is a place you simply must visit. Here you’ll find not only Krampuses and Saint Nicholas, but also beautiful landscapes, regional delicacies, and unmatched Austrian hospitality.
And if you’ve been good—you have nothing to fear!
