Thanks to the cooperation of all 7 cities, we took part in the 12th edition of the International Workshop on Religious Tourism (IWRT) in Fatima and in the Better Tourism Lisbon (BTL) tourism fair in the capital of Portugal.
We started by participating in the International Workshop on Religious Tourism (IWRT), which was inaugurated on March 6 at the Paul VI Pastoral Center in Fatima, and which attracted representatives from as many as 48 countries! IWRT is still a key point for the religious tourism industry. The discussions focused on the role of this field of tourism in the economy, culture and its development potential.
A presentation entitled "Visit Portugal" was also presented as part of the event, highlighting the historical, cultural and spiritual richness of the country. Additionally, a conference "Religious Tourism as a Path to Peace and Human Fraternity" was held, which brought together representatives of various denominations in order to promote intercultural dialogue. We were present at our stand, where our consultants presented our mission, activities and projects we are currently working on. It was very interesting and substantive, and the contacts established during the event will certainly bring benefits in our further activities.
During the Workshops, B2B business meetings were also held, which enabled talks between suppliers and recipients of tourist services. In total, over 4,500 meetings were held, which shows the growing interest in religious tourism.
We will definitely come back next year!
As for BTL, this year the fair took place in Lisbon from 12 to 16 March and was the perfect place to find an interesting destination. Organised by the AIP Foundation and held at the Lisbon International Fair since 1989, BTL is considered the most important event in the tourism sector in Portugal. It promotes both Portugal and international tourist destinations. The event includes thematic workshops, presentations of places and their cultures, and culinary tastings.
At BTL, we presented ourselves at our Shrines of Europe stand, where you could get all the most important information about our activities and get to know the members of our group better – the 7 most important cities of sanctuaries in Europe. We are pleased with the interest of the Shrines of Europe Association and we hope that thanks to such events we will strengthen our position on the European tourism market.
This year, the City of Ourém was responsible for organising and promoting the section dedicated to religious tourism. The first day of the event was full of initiatives highlighting the importance of this tourism sector and promoting culinary traditions related to pilgrimage. It was also an opportunity for Ourém representatives to present medieval wine and exquisite local gastronomic products. We have to admit it – our Portuguese partner rose to the challenge! Interesting discussions, well-prepared presentations and the opportunity to get to know the regions through local specialties are what the Lisbon trade fair audience likes the most!
We invite you to take part in these events next year already today. Mark your calendars: March 2026, Portugal, and especially Fatima and Lisbon – a must.
See you there!
