The diorama in Einsiedeln was created with extraordinary attention to detail, making it a true masterpiece of art.
The combination of almost 500 carved figures (these magnificent figures are almost 100 years old!) and a painted 30-meter background creates the illusion of space, presenting the scenes in a realistic and moving way, allowing viewers to experience the historical events deeply.
The exhibition in the Diorama presents the story of Christmas. The exhibition surprises not only with the detailed realization of the Christmas story, but also with its size and technical data. Opened in 1954, it is still very popular with visitors and has lost none of its value. There are no multimedia, touch screens or interactive exhibits here. Instead, this place offers an overwhelming, analog experience that allows you to “immerse yourself” in the world of 2,000 years ago.
The diorama presents a faithful copy of the region around Bethlehem and undoubtedly captivates visitors by taking them on a journey to foreign countries. The recreated figures, costumes and architecture present Bethlehem in a geographically absolutely realistic landscape.
The presentation is divided into four sections. In the first scene, angels announce the birth of Christ to the shepherds, in the second – we see the scene of the Nativity of the Lord with Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus. The next part of the diorama presents the arrival of the Three Kings and the story ends with the escape of the Holy Family to Egypt.
The diorama serves not only an artistic function, but also an educational one. Thanks to it, visitors can expand their knowledge of the biblical history and the culture of that period. The Diorama in Einsiedeln is a place that everyone should see, regardless of their interests or beliefs. It combines elements of art, history, education and spirituality, offering an unforgettable experience for every visitor. A visit here can be an excellent complement to a history or religion lesson.
In the same building is the Mineral Museum, which houses around 1,200 minerals and fossils from the private collection of Dr. Adelrich Eberle from Einsiedeln – it would be a sin not to stop by!
The exhibition consists of 1,200 eye-catching objects from all over the world, from Alpine quartz to magnificent crystals from South America and China. Colourful agates and polished gemstones draw attention. Exhibition boards, short texts and crystal models provide an easy-to-understand explanation of the structure of the different crystals. The exhibits presented in ultraviolet light are particularly noteworthy: in daylight they are inconspicuous, but under the influence of UV light they reveal a fantastic, unimaginable brilliance of colours. The museum presents minerals, supplemented by information boards and crystal models.
Einsiedeln is a place worth visiting in itself. Surrounded by beautiful mountain landscapes, the town offers numerous tourist attractions, such as hiking and biking trails. After visiting the Diorama and the Mineral Museum, you can relax, admire nature or visit other unique monuments of the place.
